Welcome from the Head of School

I have been Head of School since September 2011 and previously Deputy Headteacher at Hill Top for 11 years. I am delighted to say that Hill Top was judged to be "OUTSTANDING" in February 2011. This was achieved because we all work together enthusiastically to secure ever more ambitious outcomes for all our students who respond well to the school's positive atmosphere.

The students strive to achieve their very best in lessons and their exemplary attitudes and outstanding behaviour enable them to make the best of the varied opportunities provided by the school's rich and diverse curriculum.

The involvement of parents, carers, governors and multi-agency teams is of paramount importance and by working together we all support the students' aspirations in tangible ways to help students make outstanding progress both academically and socially thus improving their life skills, life chances and ultimate well-being for when they leave school.

Visit to Newcastle University Hatton Gallery

The Art options group are going on a visit to Newcastle University Hatton Gallery on 17th February 2011. Pupils are going to see an exhibition of portraits from the Arts Council Collection. They are also going to take part in a workshop at the gallery. These Year 10 and Year 11 pupils have been developing their own creative work around the theme 'Myself' for an Entry Level Art Unit.
A Year 10 pupil is looking at one of the portraits in the University Gallery. A Year 11 pupil is taking part in a mask making workshop. Pupils discussed one of the pictures. A Year 10 pupil is enjoying the workshop.

Visit to Angel of the North

Today we visited the Angel of the North. Pupils in Year 8 study sculpture in the local environment in the Spring Term. They make drawings and notes and develop their creative work in relation to this famous landmark by Anthony Gormley.

PSHE - 9A

During PSHE the Year 9s have looked at how they could improve their school grounds. The pupils came up with lots of different healthy activities they could enjoy during break time. The pupils used the Internet to research and present their ideas to the class.

Duke of Edinburgh Award Success!

Four young people have achieved Gold Duke of Edinburgh Award and on March 23 will be presented with their awards. Four new boys have joined DE and will have completed their Bronze by the end of the Summer Term, following two hopefully successful expeditions.

Weekly Points Trophy The Weekly Points Trophy is awarded to pupils who have gained the most points for work, behaviour and attendance over the week in their class. We also award trophies for those classes that have amassed the most points. Class Certificates The Certificates are awarded on a Monday in assembly for pupils who have achieved something special during the week. Literacy Trophy Each week Paul Stokoe collects teacher opinion on who has worked well in Literacy. Each class winner is awarded a trophy in Friday Asembly. Numeracy Trophy Each week, Lauren Clark brings around a themed survey for staff to elect their Numeracy Champion. The Champion is given a tie to wear in Friday assembly.

Being Safe...Year 8

This term we have been concentrating on being safe. Everyone enjoyed doing the Heartstart Certificate in First Aid. We need to do some more work on being safe online.

Football Team Training

The School football team trains on a Friday evening from four PM until Five PM. The development of the school team has its principals based in the SEAL agenda, helping players to develop their understanding of their own strengths and weaknesses as well as fostering ways to get on with others even when in an exciting and fast paced situation. Our pupils learn how to win with dignity as well as how to lose having tried their absolute best. The school team hosts regular challenge games against Hare Law School from County Durham as well as playing in small sided football tournaments organised by the Wanderers Sports Association. The small sided tournaments see us split the players into a key stage three squad and a key stage four squad. The teams are overseen by Mr Lines, who is an FA qualified coach. Promising players are referred on to the Waldridge Park Junior Football Club team for players with learning disabilities.
